- The Dog Grocer sources lamb from grass fed Australian lambs. Ruminants are designed to eat forage; grain fed ruminants have corn, soy and by products added to their feed as they are cost saving and can result in faster growth. However, a high grain feed can be difficult on the ruminant’s digestive system and often causes upsets or metabolic disorders.
With grass fed lamb, the lambs are allowed to roam freely and graze throughout the day. Not only does this mean a better quality of life, the lams’ lifestyles and diets have nutritional impact on its meat. Studies have found that when compared to grain fed lamb meat in a feedlot, there are nutritional differences in:
- Monosaturated fat: grass fed lamb contains much less monosaturated fat than grain fed lamb, making it a leaner source
- Omega 3 fatty acids: grass fed contains multiple times concentration of heart healthy omega 3 fatty acids than grain fed
- Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA): grass fed lamb contains high levels of CLA. CLA is associated with a few health benefits such as boosting physical performance, building muscles instead of storing fats, and may even help prevent cancer.
Grass fed lamb also contained 8% more protein compared to their grain fed counterparts, and are also an excellent source of vitamin B12, niacin, zinc, and a good source of iron.
